Removals in Durham

Durham is home ground for us, and it is also one of the more demanding places in the North East to run a removal. The historic core sits on a peninsula wrapped by the Wear, where the streets were laid out for carts and the hills were not laid out for anything at all. Move a house on the Bailey or off Saddler Street and the question is never how big the van is — it is where it can legally stop, how far the carry is from there, and whether the stairs inside will take a wardrobe without it coming apart first. Out beyond the centre the city changes character completely, into the post-war semis of Newton Hall, the Victorian terraces around Gilesgate and the newer estates spreading north and east, all of which move far more like an ordinary house move.

What moving in Durham is actually like

Vehicle access to the historic centre is restricted, so central moves are planned around where a van can actually be put and how long it can stay there rather than around the front door. The university also shapes the calendar: late June and mid-September bring a concentrated wave of student moves through Gilesgate, Claypath and the Viaduct, and those weeks book up well before they arrive. Elsewhere in the city the constraints are ordinary — permit bays, back lanes, and the steep approaches that catch out anyone who has only looked at a map.

What we can do in Durham

Durham questions

Usually, but it needs planning rather than improvising on the morning. Access to the historic core is restricted, so we work out in advance where the van can legally stop, how long it can stay there and how far the carry is from that point to your door. Tell us the exact street when you ask for a quote — a move on the Bailey and a move in Gilesgate are different jobs, and pricing them the same would only produce a surprise on the day.

Yes, and it is a big part of what we do in Durham. The late-June and mid-September weeks are the busiest of our year in this city, so book as early as you can — those dates go first and we would rather turn nobody away. For one or two rooms of belongings the hourly rate is usually the cheaper option; for a full house share, ask us to price it fixed.

We are about fifteen minutes out from the city, which is as close as we are to anywhere we cover. That matters most when something goes wrong — a completion that slips, a storage unit needed at short notice, an extra run for something that would not fit. Being local is the difference between sorting it that afternoon and sorting it next week.

Yes, including at short notice on the day. Our main storage partner is Rockfarm Storage at Wheatley Hill, which is a few minutes from the depot and well placed for the city, so an overnight hold and a next-day delivery is a genuinely short run rather than a second full journey. The storage contract is between you and the facility, and their insurance covers the goods while stored.
